Aural Plaque

What is it?

Ever seen a horse with what looks like a fungus, dotted or furry looking white stuff inside their ears? that is Aural Plaque.

Aural Plaque, it’s a wart virus, Papillomavirus. 90% of the horses that suffer with it are generally not affected by it apart from cosmetically.

What does it really look LIKE?

  • White, crusty, raised, and rough

  • Thick, pink, or lighter coloured skin under the plaque

  • In both or one ear

Management

Ideally if your horses are not having issues, fly masks in summer to stop flies irritating the warts, or fly creams around the ears while riding is sufficient

But of course, some horses do become sensitive, shy around the ears, head shy, shaking and rubbing the head and ears, hard to bridle or put headcollars on. This should be looked at by a vet!

They can help you treat and move forward there is no over the counter remedies.

Don’t pick or try to remove the Plaque, you will injure your horse!

Treatments

  • Leave alone

  • Vet Solutions if ears become irritated or sore

  • Vet creams for infections

  • Removal if it’s a recurring problem
